School Education under NEP 2020

Focus on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: NEP 2020 places a high priority on achieving foundational literacy and numeracy for all students by Grade 3. The policy emphasizes that the education system's foremost goal is to ensure that every child attains basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic by 2025. To support this objective, a National Mission on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy will be established by the Ministry of Education. States and Union Territories are tasked with developing implementation plans to meet this target, tracking progress closely through the NIPUN Bharat Mission (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy), launched on July 5, 2021.

  • New Curriculum Structure: The traditional "10+2" educational structure will be replaced by a new "5+3+3+4" model, which is designed to align better with the developmental stages of children.
  • Foundational Stage (Ages 3-8): - This stage includes three years of preschool or anganwadi, followed by classes 1 and 2. The focus is on activity-based learning, catering to children aged 3 to 8 years.
  • Preparatory Stage (Ages 8-11): - Covering classes 3 to 5, this stage introduces students to foundational subjects, including speaking, reading, writing, physical education, languages, art, science, and mathematics.
  • Middle Stage (Ages 11-14): - Encompassing classes 6 to 8, this stage exposes students to more abstract concepts in mathematics, sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. It is designed for children aged 11 to 14 years.
  • Secondary Stage (Ages 14-18): - This stage is divided into two phases: classes 9 and 10 (first phase) and classes 11 and 12 (second phase). It covers ages 14 to 18 years and allows for greater flexibility and subject specialization, preparing students for higher education or vocational pathways.
  • This restructured system aims to provide a more holistic and flexible education, catering to the diverse needs and talents of students. It emphasizes experiential learning, critical thinking, and a multidisciplinary approach.
